    STEAM ENGINE
    * James Watt made further improvements in the steam-engine so that it could be used to drive all kinds of machines instead of just working as a pump. He even invented a locomotive, a moving steam-engine that could run along the roads. In addition steam-engine was employed in 1785 to drive the machinery in a factory, actually a cotton mill near Nottingham.

Watt's invention of the improved steam-engine came just at the moment it was needed. British trade was expanding throughout the eighteenth century. The old methods of hand-production no longer satisfied the growing demand. Water-power allowed some expansion of industry but was not always reliable. The introduction of the steam-engine and its use for driving pumps, spinning machinery and looms led to an unprecedented expansion of industry. By it self, of course, the steam-engine merely supplied a new source of power. It would have failed of much of its effect if it had not been accompanied by other inventions in the various industries which replaced the skill of human hands by the operations of machines.
One of the most significant industrial challenges of the 1700's was the removal of water from mines. Steam was used to pump the water from the mines. Now, this might seem to have very little to do with modern steam-powered electrical power plants. However, one of the fundamental principles used in the development of steam-based power is the principle that condensation of water vapor can create a vacuum. This brief history discusses how condensation was used to create vacuum for operation of early steam-based pumps, and how James Watt invented the separate condenser. Although the cyclic processes presented in this history are not used in today's continuous flow steam turbines, current systems use separate condensers operating at subatmospheric pressure, adapting the principles explained here. Also, the stories of the inventors and their inventions offer insight into the process of technological discovery.
